Dales Oak Floors

Oak flooring is found in many of the farmhouses throughout the Yorkshire Dales, Cumbria and the Scottish Borders with its classic appearance and long lifespan. Oak is easily processed to give varying colours that range from light golden brown to deeper tones. Both heartwood and sapwood are closely similar, although sapwood typically lighter in colour and containing rays (often referred to as 'butterflies'). There are two varieties of european oak commonly used for floors; white and red. White oak is typically referred to merely as 'oak' and will be the variety described whenever the term 'oak' is used without stating a colour. Red oak has white to light brown sapwood whilst the heartwood is pink to reddish brown. The wood is generally straight-grained, hard and durable. Red oak undergoes a medium degree of colour change over time with its freshly milled pink/tan colour ambering slightly.

The Dales Oak's ranges of solid and engineered oak planks come in a vast selection of shades, finishes and textures. You can also get trim and mouldings in matching hardwax oil stained shades or brushed and distressed textures. The most popular Dales Oak floors fitted by Edenside are;

• Century Antique Gold, Light Castle Rustic, Dark Castle Rustic and finally Gold Castle Rustic, with new long length boards up to 1500mm long and from 400mm minimum, the range of lengths gives a true random floor when laid. The brushing on the oak is the secret to the sparkle in the grain of the depth of the colour by applying stained lacquers in five coats and under UV conditions of drying.
• The Nidderdale range of handscraped and fully distressed engineered boards are specifically made for the smaller areas where a balance of width of the board is important.
• The Bishopdale range of brushed rustic oak stained to the colours that creates a magnificent floor, with the beauty of the CD grade with knots and shakes all filled and brushed finish. Stained with handfinished hardwax oils for hard wearing surface, this board is suitable for laying over underfloor heating and general purpose over timber floors, concrete substrates, tiles, chipboard and asphalt onto suitable underlay or secret nailed or glued down to solid surfaces.
