Your curtains are a very expensive part of your furnishings and should be kept pristine and in their original condition by regular dry cleaning. Dry cleaning is the most effective way to remove accumulated dirt, dust and allergens and should be done at least every two years. Curtains collect a lot of household dust and odours not only from the inside of your home but also from the outside, especially when your windows are open. Sunlight can damage your curtains and especially your linings. In extreme cases where a window is exposed to the sun all day, it will not only fade your curtains but severely break down the fibres causing them to tear. Also examine your swags, tails and pelmets to see how much dust has collected on the surfaces. Your curtains act as air-filters collecting airborne dust and odours every day. With a simple sniff test you will soon know if they are fresh and clean, or stale and dirty. Monthly maintenance of your draperies is a good idea. You should vacuum once every couple of weeks. More often if need be. Try to remove the dirt and dust on a regular basis and it won't accumulate into a problem. Make sure that your vacuum is in good working condition. Make sure your vacuum bag is not over-full, as this will make your problem worse instead of better.

For spot cleaning, say due to children with messy hands or food stains, always check the Labels on your draperies and clean according to the manufacturer’s instructions. If you can find them, try to use cleaners that are natural, colorless, odorless, non toxic and biodegradable. A water soluble is a good option also. By following these guidelines, you will avoid harmful or toxic chemicals and residues to pets and children.
