Choosing the best Underlay

By their very nature Underlays are never seen but should not be ignored or avoided. They are intergral in improving the life and luxurious feel of your carpets and flooring. New underlays protect your carpets agains premature wear, absorb sounds, provide heat insulation and help recovery from point load depressions. Often, a cheap carpet can be made to feel more expensive just by using a better quality underlay. In our experience it is false economy to fit new carpet over old or softer, cheaper underlay. Carpet needs to have as firm a support as possible in order to achieve its maximum performance. An old flattened or new soft underlay will not be capable of providing adequate support to the carpet.

Major Carpet Underlay Types

Blown Rubber - Waffle

Available in a number of different weights and thicknesses this is the most common underlay fitted. The waffle refers to the surface pattern designed to trap air underneath the carpet to improve insulation.

Rubber Crumb

Crumb Rubber underlays are usually manufactured from recycled car tyres, helping to reduce our enviromental impact. Extremely hardwearing and ideal for very heavy wear areas including shops,offices and homes where heavy foot flow, wheeled traffic and castor chairs are used as they give great support and resist compression better than any other type of underlay. They come in different thicknesses and density.

Felts

Historically the first underlay materials used now having a resurgence due to the greater use of up to 100% recycled fibres resulting in much smaller carbon footprints.

Combination (Felt & Rubber)

Underlay is made up of two parts, the base is made from recycled crumb rubber and the top surface is made from 100% recycled fibres.

Other Underlay Types

Anti-Slip

If your rugs are moving, slipping or creeping about Edenside Carpets can supply you with Foxi Super Plus, a washable 100% synthetic anti-slip underlay.

Wood Floor

Often used for noise reduction other types are available as damp barriers.

Under Floor Heating

Low Tog rated felts allowing greater heat transfer are available.
